महात्मा फुले आमचे कोण लागतात ?

वर्ण आणि जाती ही शोषण करणारी व्यवस्था आहे। ती नामशेषच झाली पाहिजे, अशी भूमिका देशात सर्वात आधी घेऊन त्या विरोधात बंड पुकारणारे पहिले क्रांतिकारी समाज सुधारक म्हणजे महात्मा फुले।
मुंबई विद्यापीठाच्या स्थापनेपूर्वीच्या काळात विद्यार्थ्यांची पात्रता ठरवण्याचे साधन नव्हते। त्या काळात न्यायालयात लेखनिकाची नोकरी मिळवलेले लोकहितवादी गोपाळ हरी देशमुख यांनी उत्तीर्ण केलेली परीक्षा ज्योतिबा फुलेही उत्तीर्ण झालेले होते। तरीही टिळक, आगरकर, गोखले,कर्वे, यांच्या आधीच्या पहिल्या श्रेणीतील नेत्यांमध्ये सरकारी नोकरी न स्वीकारता सामाजिक क्रांतीची मशाल पेटवणारे फुले हेच पहिले।
मराठी भाषेचे ‘शिवाजी’ म्हटले गेलेल्या चिपळूणकर यांनी ज्योतिबा फुले यांची शूद्र जगतगुरु, शूद्र कवी, शूद्र धर्म संस्थापक अशी संभावना केली होती। फुले यांनी ज्या काळात इथल्या व्यवस्थेविरोधात बंड केले, त्यावेळचा सनातन्यांचा विरोध, प्रतिकुलता लक्षात घेता फुले यांच्या धैर्याला आणि संघर्षाला भावी पिढ्या यापुढेही अनेक शतके सॅल्युट ठोकतील, यात तिळमात्र शंका नाही।
बाबासाहेबांनी गुरू मानलेल्या बुद्ध, कबीर, फुले यांच्यातील महात्मा फुले यांची आज जयंती.
गांधीजींनीही फुले यांना उगाचच ‘ खरा महात्मा ‘ म्हटले नव्हते!
