१३ ऑक्टो. १९३५ रोजी नाशिक, येवला मुक्कामी डॉ. बाबासाहेब आंबेडकरांनी “मी हिंदू म्हणून जन्माला आलो ते माझ्या हातात नव्हते; पण मी हिंदू म्हणून मरणार नाही, ते मात्र माझ्या हातात आहे.” अशी ऐतिहासिक घोषणा केली. हिंदू समाजाला सुधारण्याचे, त्यात समता प्रस्थापित करण्याचे अनेक प्रयत्न केल्यानंतर हिंदू धर्मात राहून अस्पृश्यांना बरोबरीची वागणूक मिळणे शक्य नाही, त्यासाठी धर्मांतर करावेच लागेल असे अनुभवांती बाबासाहेबांचे मत झाले होते. कारण विषमता केवळ हिंदु समाजात नव्हती तर ती त्या धर्माच्या धर्मग्रंथांमधून आली होती. त्या ब्राम्हणी धर्माचे मूळ असलेल्या वेदांमधील चातुरवर्णा मुळेच जातींची, विषमतेची निर्मिती झालेली होती.
१३ ऑक्टोबर १९३५ च्या या घोषणेनुसार २१ वर्षांनी १४ ऑक्टोबर १९५६ रोजी बाबासाहेबांनी आपल्या लाखो अनुयायांसह बौद्ध धम्माची दीक्षा घेतली आणि त्यांना हजारो वर्षांच्या धार्मिक गुलामीतून मुक्त केले.
