बौद्ध संस्कृतीचा शब्द ‘पल्ली’

‘पल्ली’ म्हटल्यावर हा एक दक्षिण भारतीय शब्द आहे हे लक्षात येते आणि ते बरोबरच आहे. पण हाच शब्द आशिया आणि इतर खंडात सुद्धा पहायला व ऐकायला मिळतो याचे आश्चर्य वाटते. अशा या ‘पल्ली’ शब्दाचा उगम शोधला तर तो बौद्ध संस्कृतीतून आल्याचे स्पष्ट होते. नऊशे वर्षापूर्वी दक्षिण भारतात बौद्ध संस्कृती व बुद्धांची शिकवण जोपासणारी अनेक केंद्रे चालू होती. ही केंद्रे तेथील स्तूपाच्या व विहाराच्या आसपास होती. व ही केंद्रे बौद्ध भिक्खूं चालवीत असत. तेव्हा पासून केरळातील शैक्षणिक केंद्रांना ‘पल्ली’ हे नामनिधान मिळाले. पुढे कालांतराने त्याला ‘पल्लिकोडम’ असे सुद्धा म्हणू लागले. ‘पल्ली’ हा आदर व्यक्त करणारा शब्द आहे. मल्याळम् भाषेत शाळेला ‘पल्लिकोडम’ म्हणतात. सिरिलंकेतील तामिळ लोकसुद्धा शाळेला पल्लिकोडम म्हणतात.
हजारो वर्षांपूर्वी दक्षिण भारतात अनेक विहारांच्या ठिकाणी बौद्ध शैक्षणिक केंद्रे होती. आज ती राहिली नाही तरी ‘पल्ली’ शब्द टिकून राहिला आहे. मदनपल्ली, तिरुचिरापल्ली, बेल्लंमपल्ली इत्यादी अनेक नावे मूळ बुद्ध संस्कृती वरून आली आहेत. सिंध प्रांतात अनेक गावांच्या नावांच्या शेवटी पल्ली आहे. बलुचिस्तान मध्ये पल्ली-मास, गोट-पल्ली अशी गावे आहेत. एवढेच काय तर अफगाणिस्तान व उत्तर आफ्रिका खंडात सुद्धा पल्ली शब्द आढळतो. वेरो व इस्टोनिया प्रांतात ‘पल्ली’ नावाची गावे आहेत. इस्त्रायलमध्ये ‘पल्ली’ ही आडनावे आहेत. इटली देशात देखील ऍग्रोपोली, एम्पोली, नापोली, त्रिपोल अशी शहरे आहेत. दक्षिण भारतात पल्लव राजवटीत सुद्धा बौद्ध संस्कृतीची व शिकवणुकीची केंद्रे होती. कानडी भाषेत पल्लीचे ‘हल्ली’ झाले आहे. आंध्रप्रदेश मध्ये ‘पल्ले’ आणि ‘पलिया’ असा शब्द काही स्थानांना आहे. कोट्या जवळ ‘परमपल्ली’, ‘वरमबल्ली’ आणि उडपीप्रांतात ‘नियामपल्ली’ अशी गावे आहेत. महाराष्ट्र आणि गुजरात मध्ये पल्लीचे ‘वली’ झाले आहे. जसे बोरीवली, कांदिवली, गुंदवली(अंधेरी), मळवली (भाजे लेणी), आंबीवली, कणकवली, विक्रवली (विक्रोली), चांदीवली(अंधेरी),घणसवली (घणसोली), ऐरवली (ऐरोली), डोंबिवली, वाडवली(चेंबूर) इत्यादी.
स्तूपाच्या ठिकाणी ठेवलेल्या अस्थिवरून ‘पल्ली'(अस्थींचे विश्रांतीस्थळ) या शब्दाचा उगम झाला असावा असे काही संशोधकांनी म्हटले आहे. तसेच प्राचीनकाळी ‘पाली’ भाषेतून बुद्ध शिकवणुकीचे अध्ययन सर्व ठिकाणी होत असल्याने त्यावरून सुद्धा ‘पल्ली’ शब्द आला असावा असे अनेकांनी शोध निबंधात म्हटले आहे. दक्षिण आशिया खंडात असलेल्या ‘बाली’ बेटाच्या नावाचा उगमही ‘पल्ली’ वरून झालेला आहे. आंध्रप्रदेश राज्यात कोनापल्ली, मोडेपल्ली, चिंनाकोथापल्ली अशी विविध नावांची असंख्य गावे आहेत. तामिळनाडू राज्यात कृष्णगिरी जिल्ह्यात ‘पल्ली’ शब्द असलेल्या गावांचा तर खूप भरणा आहे.
लिबिया देशाच्या राजधानीचे नाव देखील त्रिपोली (त्रिरत्न युक्त)आहे. केरळात व तामिळनाडूमध्ये काही ठिकाणी ‘पल्ली’ वरून ‘पेरूमल’ झाले आहे. आणि तिथे गेल्या काही वर्षात एवढ्या बुद्धमूर्ती सापडल्या आहेत की मदुराई येथील बुद्धिजीवी वर्गाने ‘तामिळ बुद्धा अराईची पल्ली’ नावाचा प्लॅटफॉर्म/ग्रुप संशोधनासाठी स्थापित केला आहे. थोडक्यात कुठल्याही स्थानाला जर ‘पल्ली’, ‘वली’, ‘हली’ शब्द जोडलेला आढळून आला तर ते स्थान प्राचीनकाळी बौद्ध संस्कृतीशी निगडित होते व आहे हे पक्के ध्यानात ठेवावे. एकेकाळी बुद्ध नुसता भारतातच नव्हे तर सगळीकडे पसरला होता व आताही पुन्हा जगभर पसरत आहे.
