कोकणात आढळला पुरातण बौद्धस्तूप खारेपाटण जवळील शेजवळ या गावात हा बौद्ध धर्माच्या उतरत्या काळातील वज्र यान पद्धतीचा हा स्तूप।असून इतिहास संशोधक डॉ अजय धनावडे यांनी माध्यमेही बोलताना ही माहीत दिली
खरेपाटण जवळील असलेले शेजवळ या गावी मठबावा म्हणून ओळखले जाणारे हे ठिकाण बौध्द स्तूप आहेत असे इतिहास संशोधक डॉ धनावडे यांनी सांगितले
कोकणात बऱ्याच ठिकाणी बौद्ध स्मृती चिन्हांच्या पाऊलखुणा दिसून येत आहेत बौद्ध राजाचा काल खंडातील नवव्या शतकातील उतरत्या काळातील सापडलेला हा बौद्ध स्तूप वज्रयन पद्धतीचा आहे मुळात बौद्ध संस्कृतीत महान पूजनीय व्यक्तीच्या स्मृती त्यांच्या अवशेसंसाहित चिरंतन ठेवण्यासाठी निर्माण केला जात असे या निमित्ताने कोकणातील बौद्धांच्या इतिहासातील एक नवे पर्व उघडले आहे . कोकणातील इतिहास तज्ञ मा. रणजित हिर्लेकर यांनी ही या घटनेस दुजोरा दिला आहे .
जांभ्या खडकावर अर्धवर्तुळाकार सहा मीटर उंची आणि चार मीटर रुंदी असा हा स्तूप कोरला गेला आहे खडकाची झीज झाल्याने बरीच पडझड झाली आहे स्तूपाच्या बराचसा भाग जमिनीत गाढला गेला आहे .
कोकणात बौद्ध धर्माचे अनुयायी होते तळ कोकणात बौद्ध धम्म पूर्वीपासूनचा आहे याचा हा सबळ पुरावा जगासमोर आला आहे सिंधुदुर्ग जिल्ह्यातील देवगड तालुक्यातील खारेपाटण बाजारपेठे जवळील शेजवळ गावात हा स्तूप आपले अस्तित्व टिकवून आहे

कोकणच्या आणि संपूर्ण महाराष्ट्राच्या इतिहासात अभिमान वाटावा अशा बौद्ध स्तूप लेण्या संपूर्ण महाराष्ट्रभर आहेत तमाम मराठी बांधवानी हा बौद्ध वारसा जपला पाहिजे.कोकणात बौद्ध अनुयायी मोठ्या प्रमाणात होते व आता असलेले रहिवाशी हे पूर्वाश्रमीचे बौद्ध आहेत.
