भारतात १९ व्या शतकात बौद्ध साहित्य, चिनी भिक्खुंची प्रवासवर्णने आणि श्रीलंकेचे अनागारिक धम्मपाल यांच्या मदतीने बौद्ध स्थळांचा शोध घेणे सुरू होते, तेव्हा पाश्चात्य देशांत बौद्ध धर्माबाबतची माहिती तेथील समाजाला हळूहळू होत होती. त्या काळात पश्चिमी देशात बुद्ध विचारांची माहिती देणारा पहिला माणूस जर्मन तत्त्ववेत्ता ऑर्थर शॉपेनहॉर हा होता. त्याचे पुस्तक ‘द वर्ल्ड ऍज विल अँड रिप्रेझेंटेशन’ या १८१९ च्या पुस्तकात बुद्धीझमचा प्रथम उल्लेख आला. त्यानंतर डॅनिश विद्वान रासमूस रास्क १८२१ मध्ये सिलोनला आला होता. तेथे तो पालि आणि सिंहली भाषा शिकला व त्याने प्रथमच पालिचे व्याकरण लिहून प्रसिद्ध केले.

१८२५ मध्ये ‘बुद्धांचे चरित्र’ हे लेख सेंट पीटर्सबर्ग येथील एक विद्वान इस्साक जेकब यांनी लिहून एशियाटिक जर्नलमध्ये प्रकाशित केले. त्यानंतर डी. क्रास हा हंगेरियन तरुण लडाखला जाऊन तिबेट शिकला व त्याचा तिबेटन- इंग्रजी शब्दकोश १८३४ मध्ये प्रकाशित झाला. त्यामुळे अनेक दुर्मिळ तिबेटी बौद्धग्रंथ यांची माहिती जगाला झाली. ब्रायन होडसन हा ब्रिटिश होता. त्यांने संस्कृत मधील अनेक बौद्ध ग्रंथांचा संग्रह केला होता. रॉयल एशियाटिक सोसायटीसाठी त्यांनी अनेक लेख लिहिले.

१८२६ पर्यंत ‘पालि’ नावाची जगात भाषा आहे, हे काही ठराविक विद्वान सोडले तर कुणालाच याची माहिती नव्हती. तेव्हा फ्रेंच विद्वान युजिन बॉर्नोफने Essai sur le Pali नावाचा ग्रंथ लिहिला. त्याच दरम्यान कलकत्ता टाकसाळ मध्ये मास्टर असणाऱ्या जेम्स प्रिसेपने १८३४ मध्ये सम्राट अशोकाच्या शिलालेखांचा अर्थ लावला. त्या नंतर १८३७ मध्ये सिलोन मधील जॉर्ज टर्नोरने “महावंसा’ ग्रंथातील काही प्रकरणे भाषांतर करून प्रसिद्ध केली. तसेच पालि भाषेतील बुद्धांच्या उपदेशांचे भाषांतर केले. त्याच्या या प्रकाशनाने पालि भाषेतील बुद्ध उपदेश मोठ्या प्रमाणावर पाश्चिमात्य देशात प्रकाशित होऊन तेथील सनातनी लोकांत खळबळ उडाली. पुढे जर्मन शिक्षक कार्ल फेडरिक कॉपेन याने Religion of Buddha (१८५७) हे पुस्तक लिहिले.


त्याच वेळी बर्मा देशात सन १८७१ मध्ये मिंदोन राजाच्या कारकिर्दीत मंडाले येथील कुथोडाव पॅगोडात पाचवी धम्मसंगती जवळजवळ दोन हजार वर्षांनी भरली गेली.
त्यामुळे पाश्चिमात्य देशात बुद्ध तत्वज्ञान मोठ्या प्रमाणावर माहीत झाले. त्यानंतर एडविन अरनॉल्डचे ‘लाईट ऑफ एशिया’ या अप्रतिम काव्याचे १८७९ मध्ये प्रकाशन झाले. या पुस्तकाने कमालच केली. याच्या दहा लाखापेक्षा जास्त प्रती युरोप आणि अमेरिकेत विकल्या गेल्या. व अजूनही या पुस्तकाच्या प्रिंट काढल्या जात आहेत. पुढे रीस डेव्हिडने पालि टेक्स्ट सोसायटीची स्थापना १८८१ मध्ये केली. त्याच्या मृत्यूनंतर त्याच्या पत्नीने सोसायटीचे कामकाज सक्षमतेने हाताळले. व अनेक ग्रंथ उजेडात आणले. इटली देश म्हणजे रोमन कॅथलिक यांचा बालेकिल्ला. मात्र तेथील विद्वान गुसिपे टूस्सी हा तिबेटच्या दुर्गम भागात दुर्मिळ बौद्ध हस्तलिखिते मिळविण्यासाठी फिरला व अनेक संस्कृत आणि तिबेटी बौद्ध ग्रंथ मिळवून त्यांचे भाषांतर केले. अमेरिकेत हेंनरी क्लार्क वॉरेन यांनी हॉवर्ड ओरिएंटल मालिकेद्वारे ‘बुद्धीझम इन ट्रान्सलेशन’ हे ( १८९६) अप्रतिम लिखाण प्रसिद्ध केले. अशा तऱ्हने बौद्ध धम्म १९ व्या शतकात युरोप आणि अमेरिकेत पुनर्जीवित होत गेला. भारतातील सनातनी विद्वान मात्र त्याबाबत अनभिज्ञ होते.

२० व्या शतकाच्या पूर्वार्धात बर्मामध्ये उपसंपदा घेतलेल्या आयरिश भिक्खू धम्मलोक यांनी तर मोठी खळबळ माजवली. त्यांनी सिंगापूर, जपान, चीन श्रीलंका, कंबोडिया, सयाम आणि ऑस्ट्रेलिया येथे जाऊन धम्माचा प्रसार केला. त्याच प्रमाणे अॅलन बेनेट या ब्रिटिश भिक्खूनी The Buddhist Review पत्रिका (१९०८) चालवून ग्रेट ब्रिटनमध्ये धम्मप्रसार केला. त्यांच्या अकाली निधनानंतर इंग्लंडमध्ये अनेक बौद्ध संस्था नावारूपास आल्या. पुन्हा १९५४-५६ दरम्यान बर्मामध्ये भरलेल्या सहाव्या धम्मसंगतीमुळे बुद्ध जगाच्या अनेक देशांत गेला.

भारतात १९५६ साली डॉ. बाबासाहेब आंबेडकरांनी लाखो अनुयायांसह बौद्ध धर्माची दीक्षा घेतली. त्यानंतर म्यानमार वरून आलेले आचार्य गोयंका यांनी धम्म साधनेची ओळख साऱ्या जगाला करून दिली. या अशा श्रेष्ठ लोकांनी केलेल्या कार्यामुळे बुद्ध तत्त्वज्ञान जगभर पसरले. बुद्ध विचारांची लाट जगात सर्वत्र पसरली. धम्म म्हणजे संप्रदाय नव्हे तर ‘निसर्ग नियमांचे पालन करणे म्हणजेच धम्म’ हे आकलन मानव जातीस झाले. त्यामुळे आशा करूया की या २१व्यां शतकात धम्म जास्तीतजास्त लोकांपर्यंत पोहोचेल. प्रार्थना करूया की सर्व मानव जातीस त्याचे आकलन होवो. सर्वांचे कल्याण होवो. तसेच सद्यस्थितीत मानवावर आलेले रोगराईचे संकट लवकरात लवकर दूर होवो.
