“भगवान बुद्ध आणि महावीर मूर्तीमधील फरक”

बौद्ध आणि जैन धर्माचे संस्थापक हे समकालीन आहेत.समकालीन असल्याने समज गैरसमज ही आहेत.त्यांच्या प्रतिमा ,शिल्प आणि मुद्रा बरेच साम्य वाटते मात्र तसे नाहीय बुद्ध प्रतिमा आणि महावीर यांच्या प्रतिमा ओळखण्यासाठी काही महत्त्वाचे मुद्दे बौद्ध साहित्य आणि सांस्कृति अभ्यासक मा संजय सावंत यांनी खलील लेखात मांडले आहेत .वाचा सविस्तरपणे –
भगवान बुद्ध आणि महावीर दोघेही समकालीन होते. बुद्धांचा जन्म बिहार-नेपाळ सीमेजवळ असलेल्या लुंबिनी मध्ये झाला तर महावीर यांचा जन्म बिहार मधील वैशाली येथे झाला. महावीर यांचा जीवनकाल इ.स.पूर्व ५४० ते ४६८ असा मानला जातो. तर भगवान बुद्धांचा जीवनकाल इ.स.पूर्व ५६३-४८३ असा मानला गेला आहे. त्या काळात प्रामुख्याने श्रमण आणि वैदिक संस्कृती अस्तित्वात होती. भगवान बुद्ध व महावीर दोघेही राजपुत्र होते. बुद्धांनी २९ व्या वर्षी राज्य सोडले, तर महावीर यांनी ३० व्या वर्षी राज्य सोडले. सिद्धार्थ गौतम यांना ज्ञानप्राप्ती झाल्यावर ‘भगवान बुद्ध’ म्हटले गेले. भगवान महावीर यांना ‘निगन्ठ नाथपुत्त’ म्हणत होते. शरीराला क्लेश देऊन शुद्धी, मोक्ष साधता येऊ शकते असे त्यांचे मत होते. तर बुद्धांनी मध्यम मार्ग अनुसरून अष्टांगिक मार्गाची शिकवण जगाला दिली. महावीर यांचे निर्वाण वयाच्या ७२ व्या वर्षी पावापुरी, बिहार येथे झाले तर भगवान बुद्ध यांचे महापरिनिर्वाण ८० व्या वर्षी कुशिनारा, उत्तर प्रदेश येथे झाले.
त्यांच्या नंतर शिष्यांद्वारे त्यांची शिकवण भारतात सगळीकडे हळूहळू पसरू लागली. चारशे वर्षानंतर भगवान बुद्धांची प्रतिमा मूर्ती आणि शिल्पांद्वारे घडविणे चालू झाले. तसेच महावीर यांचीही मूर्ती घडविली जाऊ लागली. दोघेही श्रमण संस्कृतीतील असल्याने त्यांच्या मूर्ती या ध्यानमुद्रा अवस्थेतील घडविल्या गेल्या. बुद्धांची आणि महावीरांची मूर्ती या दोन्ही सारख्याच दिसत असल्या तरी त्यातील सूक्ष्म फरक हा सामान्यांना लवकर आकलन होत नाही. यामुळे भगवान बुद्धांच्या मूर्तीला महावीरांची मूर्ती समजले जाते. काहीतर मुद्दामहून बुद्धमूर्तीला बेलाशक महावीर यांची सांगून लोकांत भ्रम पसरवितात. असंख्य सामान्य वाचक या मुळे गोंधळून जातो. यास्तव दोघांच्या मूर्तीमध्ये व शिल्पाकृतीमध्ये काय फरक आहे ते खालील प्रमाणे स्पष्ट करण्यात येत आहे.
१) भगवान बुद्ध यांची मूर्ती घडविताना अंगावर नेहमी चिवर परिधान केलेले दाखविले जाते. मात्र महावीर यांची ध्यानस्थ मूर्ती ही वस्त्रहीन दाखविण्यात येते. हा पहिला महत्वाचा फरक आहे.
२) भगवान बुद्धांची मूर्ती व शिल्प यावर चिवर वस्त्र परिधान केल्याची खूण म्हणून खांद्या पासून कमरेपर्यंत आडव्या धाग्यासारखी वस्त्र किनार दाखविलेली आढळते. महावीरांच्या मूर्तीवर ही वस्त्रांची कडा दिसून येत नाही. हा महत्वाचा सूक्ष्म फरक अनेकांच्या लक्षात येत नाही.
३) महावीर आणि भगवान बुद्ध या दोघांच्याही ध्यानस्थ मुद्रेमध्ये डाव्या हातावर उजवा हाथ ठेवलेला आढळतो. मात्र महावीरांच्या छातीवर श्रीवत्सं चिन्ह ( कमलपुष्प ) दर्शविलेले असते. तसे भगवान बुद्धांच्या मूर्तीच्या शरीरभागावर बिलकुल आढळत नाही. हा दुसरा महत्वाचा फरक आहे.
४) भगवान बुद्धांच्या शिरावर केश उश्नी ( गोलाकार केशगाठ किंवा चुंबळ) दिसून येते. तशी महावीरांच्या शिरावर दिसून येत नाही. काही मूर्तीवर जरी ती दिसून आली तरी ती बुद्धांसारखी मोठी ठळक नसते.
५) कमलपुष्प आणि त्रिरत्न ही बौद्ध संस्कृतीची महत्त्वाची चिन्हे आहेत. भगवान बुद्ध यांची मूर्ती ही नेहमी कमलपुष्पात व पद्मासनात असते. व तीच्या विविध मुद्रा दाखविल्या जातात. महावीरांची मूर्ती फक्त पद्मासनात ध्यानस्थ दाखविली जाते. हा एक तिसरा महत्वाचा फरक आहे.
६) उभी असलेल्या अवस्थेतील बुद्धमूर्तीच्या हातात भिक्षापात्र असते किंवा विविध मुद्रा दाखविली जाते. मात्र महावीरांची आणि अनेक तीर्थंकारांची मूर्ती ही वस्त्रहीन आणि दोन्ही हात बाजूला सरळ ठेवलेल्या अवस्थेत असतात. हा चौथा महत्वाचा फरक आहे.
७) भगवान बुद्धांच्या कानाच्या पाळ्या खांद्यापर्यंत आलेल्या दाखविल्या जातात. बत्तीस लक्षणांपैकी ते एक लक्षण आहे.तसे महावीरांचे दाखविले जात नाही.
८) महावीर आणि तीर्थकांरांच्या मूर्तीजवळ सिंह आणि शंख दाखविला जातो. भगवान बुद्धांच्या प्रतिमेजवळ सिंह आणि शंख नसतात. हा पाचवा महत्वाचा फरक आहे.
ह्या व्यतिरिक्त सुद्धा बुद्धमूर्ती आणि महावीर मूर्ती यामध्ये काही महत्वाचे फरक असल्यास वाचकांनी जरूर सांगावेत. म्हणजे काहीजण बुद्धमूर्तीला महावीर मूर्ती असल्याचा भ्रम पसरवितात त्याला आळा बसेल.
