कार्ल्याची लेणी आणि भोजन (१९३८)
रस्त्यातच बाबासाहेबांनी आम्हांला फर्माविले, “तुम्हांला कोणास गाता येत असेल तर आळीपाळीने आपआपली गाणी म्हणून दाखवा.” बाबासाहेबांच्या या चकित करणाऱ्या आदेशामुळे आम्ही सर्वजण बुचकळ्यात पडलो. आमच्यामध्ये गाणारी मंडळी कोणी नव्हती. गाणे गायचे कोणास जमले नाही. शेवटी बाबासाहेबांनी माझे मित्र श्री.के.एस.सावंत यांना गाणे म्हणायला सांगितले. सावंतांनी गाणे म्हणायला ताबडतोब सुरुवात केली नाही. त्यावेळी बाबासाहेबांनी तेल्याच्या मुलाची मोठी गमतीदार गोष्ट सांगितली.
एक तेली होता. त्याचा एकुलता एक मुलगा होता. घाण्याचे काम तो मुलगाच करीत होता. त्याला गाणे म्हणायचा फार हव्यास होता. गाण्यावर त्याचे फार प्रभुत्व होते. घाणा सुरु असताना घाण्याच्या दांडीवर पालथा पडून तो सारखे गाणे म्हणायचा. पालथे पडून गाणे म्हणण्याची त्याला सवय होती. एके दिवशी त्या शहरामध्ये एक गाण्याची बैठक होती. आपल्या मुलाने जर या बैठकीत भाग घेतला तर त्याला निश्चितपणे यश मिळेल व पहिल्या क्रमांकाचे पारितोषिक मिळेल अशा प्रकारची खात्री त्या तेल्यास वाटली म्हणून त्याने आपल्या मुलाचे नाव त्या गाण्याच्या बैठकीत नोंदवले. ठरलेल्या दिवशी दोघेही बापलेक गाण्याच्या बैठकीत हजर राहिले. बैठक सुरू झाली. नंतर तेल्याच्या मुलाची पाळी आली. त्याच्या बापाने त्याला गाणे म्हणायला सांगितले. बराच वेळ झाला पण तो मुलगा गाणे म्हणेना. आपल्या मुलास गाणे काही जुळेना व म्हणायचे काही जमेना म्हणून शेवटी चिडून बापाने आपल्या मुलास एक जोराने लाथ मारली. लाथेचा मार बसल्यामुळे तो मुलगा पालथा पडला. त्याचा बाप तरी हताश झाला होता, पण काय चमत्कार? मुलगा पालथा पडल्याबरोबर सुरेल आवाजात त्याने गाणे म्हणायला सुरुवात केली. गाणे म्हणायला एक प्रकारची पोझ हवी असते, असे म्हणतात. त्याप्रमाणे तेल्याच्या मुलाला पालथे पडून गाणे म्हणायची सवय होती. बापाच्या लाथेमुळे त्याला हवी तशी पोझ मिळाली आणि हवेहवेसे वाटणारे उत्कृष्ट प्रकारचे त्याचे गाणे सुरू झाले. सर्व उपस्थित त्याचे गाणे ऐकून आनंदाने डोलू लागले. तेल्याच्या मुलाचाच पहिला क्रमांक लागला. ही गोष्ट सांगितल्यावर बाबासाहेब सावंत यांना म्हणाले, “तुला पोझ हवी आहे काय?” यावेळी आम्ही सर्वजण खूपच हसलो. आम्हांला सर्वांना खूप गंमत वाटली.
