जोतीराव फुले हे स्वयंघोषित “महात्मा नव्हते तर जनतेने त्यांना सभारंभ घेऊन हजारोंच्या साक्षीने गौरवलेले होते त्या “११मे महात्मादिना’ची गोष्ट
सत्यशोधक चळवळीतील बिनीचे कार्यकर्ते नारायण मेघाजी लोखंडे, रावबहाद्दूर वंडेकर यांच्या पुढाकाराने जोतीराव फुले यांच्या एकसष्ठी निमित्ताने जोतिरावांबद्दल कृतज्ञता व्यक्त करण्यासाठी भायखळ्याच्या मांडवी कोळीवाड्यात रघुनाथ महाराज सभागृहात ११मे १८८८ रोजी एक भव्यदिव्य कार्यक्रम आयोजित करण्यात आला. गावोगावचे सत्यशोधक या कार्यक्रमाला उपस्थित झाले. सयाजी महाराजांना या कार्यक्रमाचे निमंत्रण देण्यात आलेले होते.सयाजी महाराजांनी जोतिरावांना भारताचे “बुकर टी वॉशिंग्टन” अशी पदवी द्यावी असा निरोप पाठवला होता. जोतिरावांना कोणती पदवी द्यावी याबाबत सत्यशोधकांमध्ये बरीच चर्चा झाल्यावर त्यांनी जोतिरावांनी मानवमुक्तीसाठी केलेल्या अखंड संघर्षासाठी त्यांना “महात्मा” हीच पदवी दिली जावी हे एकमताने ठरवले गेले. तेंव्हापासून जोतीराव हे जनतेने गौरवलेले एकमेव “महात्मा” ठरले. पुढे महात्मा गांधी यांनीही जोतीराव फुले हे खरे महात्मा होते असे त्यांच्याबद्दल गौरवउद्गार काढले. तर डॉ.बाबासाहेब आंबेडकर यांनी त्यांना गुरू मानून त्यांना नमन केले.या समारंभाला उत्तर देताना जोतिरावांना अक्षरशः गहिवरून आले. जोतिबा म्हणाले,”माझ्या कनिष्ठ आणि दलित बंधूंच्या बाबतीत जे माझे कर्तव्य होते ते मी केले, त्यासाठी मी झगडलो, लढलो. माझ्या अनुयायांनी सत्यशोधक समाजाच्या कार्याचा आणि संदेशाचा अदम्य उत्साहाने, नेटाने आणि चिकाटीने खेड्यापाड्यांतून प्रसार करावा.”(सौजन्य, BBC १८ मे २०१८)
